Our Year 4 class is called ‘Hedgehog’. We chose this name because we have a family of hedgehogs living in our grounds. We think Year 4 is a key year, where children develop further their independence and resilience whilst also having lots of fun!
Meet the Team
Class Teacher - Mrs Machin
Hello, I’m Mrs Machin and I am the Class Teacher in Team Hedgehogs. I am also an Assistant Headteacher at Streethay and Leader of Education. Team Hedgehogs is where we work hard learn lots and have fun whilst we do! My favourite books are the Harry Potter series and I hope we can share them together. Away from school, I love watching the Formula One motor racing.
Class Teacher - Mrs Cooper
I’m Miss Cooper and I’m thrilled to be a part of the Streethay team working in the Class alongside Mrs Machin! Since becoming a teacher, I have been able to work with all ages of children and I love to help make sure that everyone gets the best from their time in school. I enjoy reading books, but my favourite author in Anthony Browne. I like his books because he makes the reader think carefully and he illustrates them all too! He often writes about animals which is perfect for me because I’m a huge animal lover! Outside of school, I like to explore new places and spend time with my family and friends.
Teaching Assistant - Mrs Gill
Hello! I’m Mrs Gill and I am really looking forward to meeting you all! I am a Teaching Assistant in our Team Hedgehogs where we all have lots of fun and work hard. I love reading and really enjoy being outside and riding my bike. My favourite books include The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe and HedgeHog. I have two children and a pet dog called Flo.
Our Approach to Learning
As children move into Year 4, they are really beginning to develop into more independent learners After a solid Year 3, children are ready to embed new learning behaviours learnt, ready for the challenges that lie ahead.. In Team Hedgehogs, it will be so important to us all to continue to be more independent learners, and develop our intellectual curiosity.
In Key Stage 2, the curriculum consists of three core subjects and a variety of foundation subjects, some of which will be new to the children as they move from KS1. During Year 3 we will develop our knowledge, skills and understanding in each of these subject areas, adding to the building blocks of learning already in place.
Core subjects: Maths, English Science
Foundation Subjects: History, Geography, Art and Design, Design and Technology, Modern Foreign Languages, Computing, Music, PSHE, RE and PE.
It will be important for children in Team Badgers to be really secure in basic key skills: maths fluency, multiplication tables and using our phonics knowledge to spell. Practising these at home, will be key and support children’s learning to allow easier application in our daily learning. It is at the end of Year 4 that children take their statutory Multiplication Tables Check, where they are asked to rapid recall random multiplication facts up to 12x12 via a computerised test. Therefore, constant practise and recall of these facts is vital at home. Try asking your child some multiplication facts whilst cooking tea, whilst walking to the shop, or even play some multiplication tables songs, whilst in the car!
Knowing how to be a successful learner will be key to tackling the challenges we will face in KS2. Developing our Streethay character traits throughout the year will be key to our success: resilience, curiosity, optimism, craftsmanship, empathy and eloquence.
Our classroom environment will continue to reflect the calm and nurturing experience, the children have had so far at Streethay, keeping the classroom minimal, homely and inspiring place for children to learn and grow.
In Team Hedgehogs, we endeavour to develop good relationships between school and home, through shared dialogue and regular communication. We want you to feel involved in your child’s education and be part of our successful team. Go Team Hedgehogs!
If you are a parent and have any questions or queries relating to your child’s learning, you are always most welcome to speak to Mrs Machin or Miss Cooper in person, through an arranged appointment via the office, or via email on email@example.com .
We look forward to an awesome year!
