Team Rabbits is a happy and friendly class with a positive and nurturing environment where we celebrate different characters and personalities. We have plenty of smiles, laughter and excitement while we ‘hop’ towards developing our focus and our independence so that we can aim high to achieve our best outcomes.
Meet the Team
Class Teacher - Miss Kirby
Hello, I'm Miss Kirby and I'm the class teacher in Rabbits. I 'm so excited to explore some fantastic topics in Year 1 this year including, stories of rulers, the animal kingdom and comparing what it was like living in the past to the present day. My favourite subjects are phonics and writing because I love seeing the children's confidence grow as they become fluent readers and writers! Outside of school I enjoy travelling, reading, sports and fitness and spending quality time with my family.
Teaching Assistant - Mrs McGlade
Hello, I am Mrs McGlade and I am the Teaching Assistant in Team Rabbits. I am really looking forward to all of the exciting new things we will learn during your time in Year 1! My favourite subjects are Phonics and Reading. My favourite author is Jill Murphy- hopefully we can share some of her stories together this year!
Our Approach to Learning
Year 1 is an exciting year for children full of fun and learning. The children begin to develop skills that will support them throughout their life such as: increased independence; how to be a good citizen and friend; as well as a jam-packed curriculum! We like to have lots of fun in Year 1, but we also understand the importance of being safe and following the rules.
We aim to encourage a love for learning by offering a broad, balanced and stimulating curriculum through which our children enjoy a range of rich learning experiences that are not only fun but challenging and engaging. The KS1 National Curriculum is made up of three core subjects, and seven foundation subjects. During Year 1, children will begin to develop their knowledge, skills, and understanding of each of these subjects. Building on what they have learnt in school already in Early Years. These expectations will be shared and discussed with you throughout the year.
Core Subjects: English, Maths, Science.
Foundation Subjects: Art & Design, Computing, Design & Technology, Geography, History, Music, Physical Education
The transition from Reception to Year 1 is a big step with the change from the Early Years Statutory Framework to the National Curriculum. This is always at the forefront of our minds at the start of the year and we work to suit the needs of the children. Therefore, we will maintain the use of continuous provision in the first few weeks and transfer this into rotational activities as the children settle.
The national phonics screening test takes place at the end of year 1 and is therefore a big focus for us. The children will prepare for this throughout the year by playing games, completing writing and reading activities, group activities, homework and computer games, which they thoroughly enjoy. We invite parents into school to discuss the Year1 phonics test and national expectations closer to the time.
Partnerships with parents/carers continue to be key, together we can make Year 1 a successful, fun and exciting year for all.
Our classroom environment continues to reflect the calming and nurturing approach that has been established at Streethay, keeping it minimal, homely and avoiding too much stimulation. Outdoor learning will also continue, with opportunities for forest school sessions too.
Team Rabbits celebrate all our unique children, as not one child is the same. We enjoy providing enrichment activities, these include inviting visitors into the school, exploring the local area and trips to some exciting locations. All to support their learning and development as a well-rounded citizen.
Parent Teacher Contact
If you are a parent and you have any questions relating to your child's learning or you are concerned about anything at all please hang back and speak to Miss Kirby at the door. If you prefer you can make an appointment to see Miss Kirby through the school office. Alternatively you can email the school office on: info@streethay.set.org all messages will be passed to the Class Teacher.
We believe that homework is an excellent way for children to share learning with their families, as well as enabling them to practise and rehearse what they are learning in our school setting.
Each week a learning newsletter with suggested homework tasks is sent out on the Family app by the class teacher. If you complete work at home of any kind, please share this with school using the Family app. At Streethay we love to celebrate achievements and milestones outside of school also, so please add these too! Please upload any work or achievements to your child’s journey found in your child’s profile.
Please use the link below to access the Family in-app help centre if you are unsure on any aspect around using the Family app.
